Full-Time Medical Advocate

CAPSEA, Inc. is looking to hire a full-time Medical Advocate. This individual will work with Cameron and Elk County medical offices and local hospitals/clinics to act as a liaison between the healthcare communities and CAPSEA, Inc. JOB DESCRIPTION
ROLE: Medical Advocate (Full-time position)
TEAM: Advocacy
RESPONSIBLE TO: Direct Services Supervisor
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
SALARY RANGE: $35,000 – $45,000
DATE: April 2024

PURPOSE:

The Medical Advocacy Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to act as a liaison between CAPSEA and the medical community in the surrounding area. Our mission is to help all members of the medical field understand the warning signs of intimate partner violence and human trafficking, as well as the effects of domestic violence and sexual abuse, so that they can offer the most relevant and effective care possible.

The Medical Advocacy Coordinator works closely with area hospitals, clinics, and doctor’s offices, to provide support in the form of crisis intervention to patients, educational resources, and hands-on trainings. The Advocate also participates in outreach by attending community events and health fairs in the region, offering training classes, sharing information and meeting with victims/survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Upholding agency mission.
  • Promoting trauma-informed care through training, systems advocacy, and technical assistance for healthcare professionals, community services, housing, victim services, and surrounding county resources.
  • Networking and cross referrals with community agencies.
  • Managing the referral system for clients in crisis.
  • Responding to calls to the emergency room or medical facilities as needed.
  • Scheduling on-call as needed.
  • Attending PCADV and Respect Together (formerly PCAR) meetings (medical advocacy & other).
  • Ensuring appropriate staffing and training to support related program policies and procedures.
  • Evaluating and improving systems/processes by ensuring best practices are utilized and standards of excellence in service delivery are met.
  • Facilitating groups and committees as needed.
  • Providing after-hours, on-call advocacy and accompaniment as scheduled and per CAPSEA policies and funding requirements.
  • Treating all service recipients, visitors and employees with empathy, kindness, respect and dignity.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, medical field, psychology or related field preferred and/or equivalent experience.
  • Understanding and commitment to the empowerment model of service provision.
  • PC skills are essential.
  • Experience in developing and cultivating teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and relate to all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of PCADV, Respect Together (formerly PCAR), and PCCD regulations and standards.
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License, use of personal vehicle and proof of appropriate auto insurance and registration.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
  • Must successfully complete the mandatory 80-hour Counselor/Advocate training in domestic and sexual violence.
  • Must complete a minimum of 10 hours of additional training per year as required by PCADV/Respect Together (formerly PCAR)/PCCD guidelines.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Act 33, Act 34 clearances and FBI fingerprint check.
  • All other duties deemed necessary by CAPSEA’s D.S.S. and/or Executive Director.
